BELIZE Day 4

Day 4 started out with an early morning drive to Belmopan, the capital of Belize, to meet with Marcos and his son Francis to kayak. We met him at the local bus station and we went in his truck up the Hummingbird Highway and through pastures, farms, and across rivers to get to the opening of the caves in the jungle. The 7 miles kayak trip we took was under the mountain range. We were in the caves for most of the time. In between the caves were little breaks where you could see an amazing view of the jungle. It was a sigh of relief for me to see the sunlight with each break of the caves. We were in pitch black darkness in the caves with one head light and bats flying over head. When the current was moving fast we had to try our best to steer into the center because the water tended to run towards the walls of the cave. I never thought I would ever do this in my life. Kayaking Lake Austin is much different! ha. I felt like a champ afterwards. Francis came and picked us up at the end of the 7 miles of caves and drove us back to Belmopan. When we arrived back in Belmopan we realized that the Belize v Guatemala soccer game was about to begin. It was kind of humorous seeing traffic in Belize. They don't have alot of cars and most of the population just takes the bus that travels the length of the highways everyday.  If we didn't have a flight to catch you know where we would have ended up. We drove back to the airport, dropped off our rental Kia, and hopped on a tiny plane to San Pedro. The best part about this flight was that the plane left a minute before we checked in and they turned around for us!! haha. Only in Belize would this be okay. We made a short stop at one other landing strip and made it to San Pedro in about 20 minutes. Victoria House had someone pick us up from the airport.... in a golf cart... EVERYONE drives them. genius. I guess when you live on an island that small you don't need much. We ate dinner at Victoria House with a couple we had met at Blancaneaux and went to sleep pretty early.
